ProPublica has created a calculator to illustrate the disparity of an actual limb’s worth on a state by state basis.
Almost every state has its own as a “schedule of benefits” that divides up the body. The loss of an arm, in NY is worth $232,891 but in Alabama it’s $193,950, in Connecticut it’s $153,605 and $439,858 in Illinois. An eye in New York comes in at $129,384, but it’s worth $290,871 in Vermont.
